There are plenty of nature trails for biking and walking, as well as plenty of recreational areas to play a pickup game or join a local sports league. North Mecklenburg park features things like:

2) Latta Nature Preserve

Calling all nature lovers! If you live in or near Huntersville, you can’t miss Latta Nature Preserve. There’s nothing quite like feeling connected to nature and getting fresh air, and Latta Nature Preserve is the place to do it.

Featuring over 1,460 acres of land, this former cotton plantation was transformed into the area’s largest protected nature preserve. Latta Nature Preserve is the only public property in the area open to horseback riding, so visitors can bring their horses and explore 13 miles of beautiful riding trails. And if you don’t have a horse, you can enjoy 16 miles of hiking trails.

You’ll notice over 130 unique species of plants and animals on these trails. Plus, you can get out on the water and enjoy fishing, paddle boating, and kayaking. With many restaurants on-site and numerous picnic areas, you can spend an entire fun-filled day at Latta Nature Preserve.

  • Bonus ?: The Carolina Raptor Center is located in the Latta Nature Preserve where you can see over 30 different birds of prey in an outdoor aviary. The Raptor Center is the largest eagle aviary in the Southeast, and they host numerous educational programs for all ages.

3) Torrence Creek Greenway

Rock formations, treefrogs, and wildflowers, oh my! While the Torrence Creek Greenway is technically more of a walking trail than a park, it’s still not to be missed. This 2.36-mile greenway runs through wooded areas behind quiet neighborhoods.

Bring the kids to ride their bikes or go for a fun walking date. You may notice deer walking in the western meadow and large rock formations in the eastern section. (When we say “large,” we mean some rocks are as big as school buses!)

One of the most beautiful places to catch the sunset in Huntersville is at Blythe Landing Park. Situated right on the shores of Lake Norman, this is the perfect park for people who love boating. Blythe Landing is a 26-acre park with 6 boat ramps and plenty of spacious parking for boat trailers.

One of the main attractions here is Dockside Cafe, where you can dock your boat and walk up to enjoy a nice meal (or grab more nightcrawlers for fishing). If you’d rather stay on land, there are playgrounds, sand volleyball courts, and picnic areas to enjoy.

6) Buckeye Cove Nature Preserve

The park formerly known as Stephens Road Nature Preserve is now called Buckeye Cove Nature Preserve. As a Natural Heritage Site in Mecklenburg County, Buckeye Cove is a beautiful and diverse place to explore.

In Buckeye Cove, you’ll find Painted Buckeye— a shrubby tree that acts as a nectar source for pollinators like hummingbirds. With 394 acres to explore, you’re sure to see incredible wildlife like frogs, toads, salamanders, and maybe even deer or bobcats!

There’s a 3.6-mile walking trail that’s great for all experience levels running along The Catawba River. The Buckeye Cove trail is the place to take in all the beautiful nature Huntersville has to offer. Just don’t forget bug spray!
